What about philanthropy in India?

Private and corporate philanthropy in India is expected to reshape the country’s development landscape and help it achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As the Indian philanthropic sector grows and becomes more complex, it is high time to quantify, map and analyse how philanthropy contributes to India’s development.

Yet, data and evidence on private philanthropic giving and corporate social responsibility in India are still largely lacking. The OECD Centre on Philanthropy and, the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), with support from the Ford Foundation, are partnering on a data collection and analysis project to address this major gap. The project is based on the same methodology behind the OECD’s survey on private philanthropy for development, which is also how Official Development Assistance is tracked.

This massive effort will help Indian foundations strengthen the impact of their philanthropy and social investment. It will specifically help them collaborate more effectively to accelerate social development in India. Finally, it will help address the lack of internationally comparable data, which are indispensable for tracking global progress on the Financing for Development agenda and the SDGs.
